Social-Emotional Learning

What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy, build relationships, and make responsible decisions.

How SEL and CA MTSS Align?

Research shows that emotion, attention, and learning are deeply connected—students thrive when their social, emotional, and academic needs are supported in a coordinated way.

Embedding SEL within CA MTSS ensures:

  • A safe and supportive learning environment
  • Staff who model SEL competencies
  • Instructional practices that promote student voice, agency, and belonging
  • Early identification and support for students needing additional help
