| Teenage Legal Survival Skills |
Volunteer attorneys from the Orange County Bar Association are available to
visit classrooms to make a presentation on legal survival skills for young
adults. The program deals specifically with the responsibilities students will
face upon turning eighteen. Each presentation will take approximately 45
minutes and is suitable for a junior or senior government or civics class.
Volunteer attorneys will provide each classroom with copies of the State Bar of
California publication, "When You Become 18," and will focus the presentation
on specific areas of the materials including: reaching the age of majority
(i.e. registering to vote, entering into binding contracts), money matters
(i.e. opening bank accounts, credit cards, being financially responsible), and
moving out (i.e. rental agreements, landlord/tenant rights, leasing vs.
renting).
Volunteer attorneys will also touch on law as a career. A brochure on becoming
a lawyer will be handed out to interested students.
Please indicate on the enclosed form your interest in having such a
presentation made in your classroom. We expect a high demand and will make
every effort to fill requests as they are submitted.

| The Special Education Alliance |
The Special Education Alliance was conceived as a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA)
and was approved by the 28 districts in Orange County in the fall of 2003/04.
The Executive Committee, composed of Superintendents, has as its specific goals
1) staff development, 2) legislation and support of full funding for mandated
services, and 3) litigation, as necessary. These goals are carried out through
the auspices of the Review Committee composed of membership as follows: five
Superintendents regionally nominated, OCDE legal counsel, two private attorneys
representing school districts in special education matters, two SELPA
directors, and one business administrator. The eleven member panel has met
consistently for the last two years, with a variety of outcomes believed to be
beneficial to the Alliance's stated objectives.
The Alliance now hosts an information website at
http://www.specialedalliance.org, which includes calendars, postings of
agendas, minutes, and information related to special education.
