Dr. James Hines Foundation

The Dr. James Hines Foundation was established in 1992 by Orange County residents Bill and Sue Gross to reward exemplary teachers.  Dr. Hines' integrity, love of learning, passion for excellence, and quick wit inspired his former student, colleague, and friend, Sue Gross, to name the Foundation in his honor.

Dr. Hines began his career in education in 1953 as an English teacher at Fullerton Union High School.  In 1970, he became a professor of English at Saddleback College where his love and knowledge of Shakespeare became legendary among his students.  He retired in December 1993.  His untimely death in January 1994 left a void among his colleagues and family members who took great pride in his accomplishments and dedication to the educational community.

Because of the legacy of Dr. James Hines and the generosity of Bill and Sue Gross, over $3 million has been awarded to more than 1300 teachers since 1992.  The Orange County Department of Education extends its most sincere appreciation and gratitude to Bill and Sue Gross for their continuing support of the Orange County Teachers of the Year program.
