The Orange County Spelling Bee is sponsored by The Orange County Register and coordinated by the Orange County Department of Education. Winners from school or district spelling bees participate in the county’s Preliminary Written Round. The best spellers from the written round move on to the Final Oral Round, a spell-off, where students spell words orally to determine the top speller in the county. The winner participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals in Washington D.C.
Spelling bees support Common Core State Standards by encouraging students to improve their spelling and expand their vocabularies which positively affects reading, writing, and oral presentation skills. In addition, spelling bees help strengthen the 21st-century skills of communication and character development that will help students to be successful in school, college, and life.
All events for the Orange County Spelling Bee are held at the Orange County Department of Education in Costa Mesa.
