Road Watch 2011
Three Friday Night Live (FNL) chapters participated in a statewide survey to record distracted driving incidents during a one hour period. Magnolia High School, Ocean View High School, and Sunny Hills High School FNL youth joined other FNL chapters across the state on October 11, 2011, to conduct the survey. According to Allstate, the event sponsor, students monitored 62 intersections near high schools across California observing more than 6,700 cases of distracted driving in merely one hour's time, an average of more than 100 instances of distracted driving. Common distractions recorded included cell phone use as either texting or not using a hands-free device, while more extraordinary distractions included kissing, writing, and feeding children who were riding in the car. In Orange County alone, a total of 527 distractions were recorded. This data will be used to support the statewide campaign to promote safe driving habits.
