Brookhurst Junior High School, Anaheim Union High School District

BrookhurstPennies-Kiss-Pig.gifDuring March and April 2011, Brookhurst Junior High School Club Live chapter sponsored the “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Chapter members set a goal to raise $1 for every student enrolled in the school, this totaled $1,308. Posters and announcements were made to advertise that Interim Principal Darrick Garcia promised to kiss a pig if the goal was met. Collection boxes were placed in every classroom and were counted on a daily basis. In addition, a ceramic piggy bank was placed in the main office, where someone donated a $100 dollar bill! A few teachers even matched the donations that their students made. Club Live held two major fundraising events to help meet the goal. The first event was held on St. Patrick’s Day when the students were given the opportunity to donate $1 in exchange for being able to wear green clothes instead of their school uniform. The second event was a coin toss competition held during lunch. During this activity, Club Live also invited students to donate their coins in any denomination as well as play the game. Due to the hard work of the students and advisor, they exceeded their goal. $1,823.59 was collected for the Pennies for Patients campaign and on Friday, April 15, 2011, Principal Garcia kept his promise and kissed a pig during a school assembly.
