A charter school is a public school that provides instruction to any of grades TK-12, and is usually created or organized by a group of teachers, parents and community leaders. Typically authorized by an existing local public school board, specific goals and operating procedures for the school are detailed in the charter petition.
Charter status frees the school from many of the state statutes and regulations that apply to school districts. The law requires that a charter school be nonsectarian in its programs, admission policies, employment practices, and all other operations, and prohibits the conversion of a private school to a charter school.
